ZENESCOPE'S RETURN TO WONDERLAND

Zenescope Entertainment will launch Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Return to Wonderland in May with a special 99-cent #0 issue. The #1 issue is scheduled for July.

Raven Gregory, of The Gift and Se7en, is writing Return to Wonderland.

"I always loved the dark nature of fairy tales," Gregory said. "That sense of a moral lesson wrapped up in a horror movie -- just waiting for the big bad wolf to jump out at you from around the next corner. With Return to Wonderland we wanted to rip off the pretty bow and cute wrapping paper and reveal the real meat of the beast -- but we still wanted to pay homage and follow up on the events of the original."

"From concept to finished script this series is nothing short of an intense and emotional thrill ride," said Ralph Tedesco, vice president of Zenescope. "Raven was asked to step to the plate on this and he smashed it out of the park. I truly believe this series will show comic book fans that Raven Gregory easily deserves being mentioned as one of the best young writers in the industry."

The 99-cent issue will have five pages of original story, character sketches and other bonus material. It features a cover by Al Rio.

KISS RETURNS TO COMICS WITH PLATINUM

After nearly 30 years at being involved with comics with some attempts being very popular, some…not so much, KISS is coming back to comics, this time partnered with Platinum Studios.

According to Variety, Platinum and the newly formed Kiss Catalog (run by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley) have joined to form the Kiss Comics Group, which will debut KISS 4K as a comic, and then move to other media.

From the trade:

"Kiss 4K," the story of the transformation of Simmons, Stanley and other Kiss band members from rock stars to world-protecting warrior spirits, will debut as the world's largest comicbook, priced at $50. It will be the first comicbook-based property to simultaneously launch all of its merchandise in the U.S., France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Eventually, a new Kiss comic involving characters King of All Beasts, Demon, Starchild and Celestial will appear weekly online at Kisscomicsgroup.com. "Kiss 4K" will be unveiled at the Wizard World convention in Los Angeles in March.

The second title is expected to be "Kiss Girls," which features four teenagers who "talk about shopping and are about as dysfunctional as anyone until something happens to them and they get to wear the Kiss makeup and look good doing it," Simmons said.

According to the report, the KISS characters will be integrated into the Platinum Universe, with Platinum characters appearing in the comic.

Platinum's Press Release reads:

Platinum Studios, Inc., an entertainment and comic book company that controls the world’s largest independent library of comic book characters, and KISS Catalog Ltd., the billion-dollar merchandising empire created and managed by original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, announced the creation of a new comic book entertainment company, the KISS Comics Group. This is the first time KISS will be producing its own comic book-based characters.

The line kicks off at the Wizard World Los Angeles Convention on March 16-18, 2007 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, where both Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley will be present to promote the debut of KISS 4K #1, Destroyer Edition. The Destroyer Edition will be a super-sized largest comic book EVER printed, and the ongoing KISS 4K monthly series will begin in May. Newcomer Ricky Sprague writes KISS 4K, with #1 art by the hyper-talented painter, Kevin Crossley. Rodolfo Migliari (Freshmen) is the cover artist. Tickets and additional information on the Wizard World Los Angles Convention can be found at wizardworld.com.

KISS 4K tells the story of the transformation of the KISS band members into eternal, evil-fighting spirits. However, once they transform, they are unable to transform back into their human forms. Fans can get a sneak peak at KISS 4K images today at www.KISSComicsGroup.com and images are available for mobile download at www.PlatinumStudiosMobile.com.

“Gene Simmons approached me with the idea of launching KISS Comics Group and working together has simply been incredible,” said Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, Platinum Studios’ founder and chairman. “Platinum Studios has been working with independent comic book creators for years; KISS’ worldwide legion of fans spans an enormous age range, providing this new company with a given global audience.”

"We’ve had licensed KISS comic books before but never our own imprint and never with the wide reach across so many multi-media platforms," said Gene Simmons, a founding member of KISS. “Paul Stanley and I are personally involved in all day-to-day decisions and we are looking forward to extending the KISS legacy, images and sound to our fans around the world.”

"As the iconic KISS characters have continued to evolve far beyond our beginning in rock music, we have always looked for the ideal situation for a KISS comic book outlet that was as far reaching as we originally conceived and intended. Platinum fills that slot perfectly," said KISS co-founder Paul Stanley.

Signatures Network and Dell Furano, which already handle worldwide licensing for KISS Catalogue Ltd, will be handling worldwide licensing for KISS Comics Group and for KISS 4K on behalf of the co-venture.
Fans can get the Limited Edition Collectors Preview book of KISS 4K and order Launch Edition KISS 4K merchandise including t-shirts, hats, mugs and posters at www.kisscomicsgroup.com or www.kissonline.com while supplies. In addition, Launch Edition Preview images of KISS 4K are available for mobile download at www.PlatinumStudiosMobile.com.

et maintenant l'interview sur Newsarama ...

TALKING TO KISS ABOUT THE COMICS
by Steve Fritz

The KISS Army is on the move again…and they have returned to a land they are quite familiar with, comics.

As both KISS and comic fans know, this isn’t their first foray in the comic book field. In 1977 Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and then members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss teamed up with Marvel to literally put their blood and guts on the printed page and produce the largest comic of the days. They would do it again at the beginning of the century with Dark Horse.

Now they’re working with Scott Rosenberg’s Platinum Studios for what will now again be the largest comic book ever printed, Destroyer. The first issue’s $50 price tag has some hardcore comic fans being a tad snarky, but Platinum’s editor supreme Jim McLauchlin has an answer for that:

“The Destroyer Edition is absolutely a novelty item,” said McLauchlin. “But if there’s one thing that 30 years worth of KISS merchandising has proven, it’s that there’s fans that love this stuff. There are KISS collectors who have all sorts of off-the-wall items. This is yet another one for whoever chooses to venture there. The exact same book will be available in standard comic format with 32 story pages and 44 pages total in May for $3.99. With issue #2 and forward, we’re at $2.99. No one’s gonna twist anyone’s arm into buying a Destroyer Edition; just like I buy Runaways every month without benefit of a gun to my head. But it is the kinda thing that grabs attention and gets newspapers and radio stations to notice comics, which is hopefully a good thing for all. Hell, there’s actually a KISS Coffehouse in Myrtle Beach that will be carrying the comic, introducing the medium to a new audience there.

“Gene and Paul are all about trumpeting this stuff loud. Gene came by the office yesterday and we started chatting about some of the art hanging on the walls, playing that ‘trace back the artistic influence’ game. He noted that one guy was evocative of Wally Wood, and we got into that whole EC discussion which ended, as it always does, with Gene rhaPS:odizing about his love of Reed Crandall. I’m more a Graham Ingels guy, myself, but the point is we just had one of those fun, cool, geek conversations like you do with your friends all the time. The guy has a serious love of this stuff, and really wants to bring it to the masses.”

So, in part of their plans to trumpet loud and bring it to us masses, who could Newsarama not resist a shot at talking to Simmons and Stanley? We didn’t.

As it turns out, sure the guys are proud of themselves. As one of the biggest and longest-running acts in rock’n roll, they should be. But, as McLauchlin points out, they are also comic book fans. Very serious ones.

Here’s what they had to say:

NEWSARAMA: You’ve done comic books before. I remember the Marvel comic. What made you decide to do comics again?

PAUL STANLEY: I think the time comes when you are excited to be working with a team. It’s really a team that wins a game. It’s armies that win battles. We’ve assembled some great people that we think can bring something to kids.

I mean, obviously, this first issue is this monster sized book that will wind up in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest comic because we wanted to make a statement. We wanted people to really make sure they paid attention to this. However, the one following this first one will be a more compact and easy to handle.

That said, we got a great team with the Platinum people. We got a great writer with Richard Sprague, who really has never done a comic before. Kevin Crosley, who did the art, never did comics. But they are all people who understand what KISS is all about.

So we’re here to take it to another level. We started with guitars and now we’re saving worlds.

NRAMA: So let’s get to the comic itself. The basic story, the concept of the Unholy, was that your idea?

GENE SIMMONS: (When it comes to comics) We can quote psalm and verse. For instance, I can tell you just about every title that Steve Ditko drew and inked, including how he also inked Jack Kirby’s Hulk.

Unholy was our idea about a malevolence that is kind of a next door neighbor to Steve Ditko’s Nightmare from Doctor Strange, maybe he also has a little Baron Mordo and some Eternal Vishantu with some Hoary Hosts of Hogarth. But the main point is whether or not Unholy came from us, or who created who, this is a division of labor that works more like a relay race. A few guys get together, realize it’s going to be a long race, and everyone has to run the best race they can. When you get to the end of your section, you hand the baton on to the next guy, who then runs the race. You trust the guy who’s carrying the baton is going to do his best. When the end guy wins, everybody wins.

We’re there at the beginning and the end. We guard the gateway to the world that is KISS, much like Stan Lee, Gardner Fox, Denny O’Neil or someone else. They would create a character, much like Roy Thomas even before his Alter Ego fanzine days. Then we are smart enough to know not to micromanage. Everyone on our team is as professional as you can imagine. The best thing we can do is just bring the ball to them and let someone else dunk it.

PS:: What Ricky brought to the party was he knew KISS inside out. With someone like that, the best thing to do is ask him what was his take on us and then letting him run with his ideas. I mean we can always pull them back, but so far everyone has just been hitting it out of the park.

NRAMA: Gene, weren’t you a school teacher at one time?

GS:Yes. For a short time I taught in Spanish Harlem at P.S. 75.

NRAMA: Didn’t you use comic books as teaching tools back then?

GS:That’s a two-part answer. The first part is my college term paper was entitled ‘Social Significance of the Panel Graphic Art Form.’ I got an A-.

In those days it was difficult to get the kids who went to school, some would call them Spanish kids, and reading about Jane Eyre wasn’t doing a whole lot for them. On the other hand, they were totally engrossed about the idea of hero with his face covered, not being too loved by the cops or the bad guys and come from a broken home. In fact, it would really strike home with them when the hero would have his parent killed right in front of them, because that was part of their everyday life. This was a Spanish kid coming out of Spanish Harlem. They devoured and loved it. To them comics were more significant than any Shakespeare.

NRAMA: Do you hope your comics could reach to them as well?

GS:I think what we all hope for is the following. The first is a good clarion call. Let’s pick up our heads and stop just preaching to the fanboys out there. We all read the same books. This comic is really a great piece of product, so let’s all pick it up and read it. That’s enough of a plug.

We should all start preaching this stuff the way Christians preach to the outsiders. Remember Todd McFarlane’s Spider-Man sold ONE MILLION copies (emphasis Gene). Where are those people? Nowadays, if you sold 20,000 pieces the industry thinks you’re doing well. C’mon! There are a lot of new young people who would get into this stuff. All we have to do is be creative, grab them by the scruff of their necks and say forget about the next Electronic Arts game and look at this American art form called a comic book. It actually embodies modern mythic characters in the same way the Greeks created the Gods. Our characters are just as cool. What’s the difference between Mephisto in Silver Surfer and the Greek mythos kind of stuff? Mephisto was always kind of cooler to me.

What we’re really doing is mixing Americana and classic Greek legends. We’re saying there are more worlds than there are dreamed of.

Now we are taking a much more decidedly darker view. This is not a funny animal comic, with all due respect for funny animal comics. This ain’t Archie. But we are such big fans of the medium that as adults we have analyzed this to its subatomic particles. I mean we can always just go out and sell comic books, but being who we are, why can’t we go and tug on the sleeves of people and make them understand this is an artform…and certainly KISS should be leading the charge.

I mean one of the reasons why we’re doing the biggest comic book of all time is…let’s call it what it is, we’re trying to get attention. I mean why shouldn’t there be a comic book almost three feet high? Who said they’re supposed to look like these paper cut-outs? I mean when we put out the Marvel comic book…

NRAMA: I remember you did a thing where you put your own blood in the ink.

GS:Not only that, but we insisted it was magazine size because we were looking at the endgame. We saw that comic books generally got dropped in the comic book section. Now not everybody went to the comic book section, and KISS fans by and large did not. We had the view that our stuff was every bit as important as Time magazine, and therefore should be wracked near Time. Because of that, Stan and the Gang started putting out comics that size.

The point is, it’s not just what’s inside, it’s also what’s on the outside. It’s all about both. We like to write songs and play them, but make it bombastic. That’s what this is. It’s a volley across the bough. We’re basically saying ‘Hey world…deal with it!’

NRAMA: Another point is you guys aren’t just doing a one-off. You have a whole series in the works, right?

PS:: Yes. This is a 12-issue arc. The story is going to continue on. I have to tell you the stuff that’s being written now is so heavy.

NRAMA: So there’s a whole pile coming after this issue.

PS:: A whole lot more after. There are worlds to be both conquered and saved.

NRAMA: One thing I must complement you on is you made me do my rock’n roll homework. I had forgotten about Wicked Lester.

GS:Well, I think one of the great things is when there’s that little wink, wink, nudge, nudge to the fans who have always been there. At the same time it still has to work for the masses. I like the idea that Wicked Lester is sort of this androgynous multi-sexual kind of creature. That was Scott and his team.

I mean let’s give credit where credit is due. Most people would think, considering what we’re about, that we would come up with the biggest comic book ever. But really, it was Scott.

PS:: It’s always interesting to see how we get credited for being marketing geniuses when the fans and the people around us very often were the real geniuses. We put things out because the fans and people around us came up with them. It’s a giant sized comic book because people wanted it. We’re just here to give it to them.
