Bruce Wayne will return in a time-spanning miniseries by Grant Morrison

DC Comics' week of announcements continues this morning with news of the return of Bruce Wayne in a time-traveling miniseries written by Grant Morrison.

Debuting in April 2010, the aptly named Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne finds the character -- presumed dead after the events of Final Crisis but actually hurled into the far-flung past -- attempting to reclaim his memory and his place in time.

"Return is a fairly intricate time-travel story in which the world's greatest hero, the optimum man, is up against the supreme challenge to his ingenuity and skill," Morrison tells USA Today. "How does Batman get out of the ultimate trap? It has a mystery and an apocalyptic countdown going on, there are some major twists and reveals, and it sets up big changes to the Batman universe status quo."

The six-issue miniseries, which features a rotating roster of artists beginning with Chris Sprouse and followed (possibly) by Frazer Iriving, opens in the Late-Paleolithic Era and then moves on to 17th-century Gotham Village, and so on.

"Each of the stories is a twist on a different 'pulp hero' genre — so there's the caveman story, the witchhunter/Puritan adventurer thing, the pirate Batman, the cowboy, the P.I. — as a nod toward those mad old 1950s comics with Caveman Batman and Viking Batman adventures," Morrison says. "It's Bruce Wayne's ultimate challenge — Batman vs. history itself!"

The first issue of The Return of Bruce Wayne will be 38 pages, with subsequent issues containing 30.

If you’ve been following JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE, then you know some major events have been shaking up Green Arrow and his supporting cast’s status. Specifically, Red Arrow finding himself one arm short of a pair.

What happens when a hero has a fateful decision to make? And how can another hero rebuild his world after a life-altering tragedy?

Both ideas are explored in two special books hitting in March, both written by J.T. Krul: JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE AND FALL #1, which bridges the gap between JUSTICE LEAGUE: CRY FOR JUSTICE, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and the upcoming JUSTICE LEAGUE: THE RISE OF ARSENAL four-issue mini-series. Concurrently, readers of the ongoing GREEN ARROW series will deal with the fallout in a storyline titled “The Fall of Green Arrow,” starting with issue #31.

Et pour ceux qui ne le saurait pas c'est le même costume que le green arrow de smallville.

Superman & Muhammad Ali Step Back In The Ring

(source:CBR)

Once upon a time, the most electrifying boxer in sports history was most likely known to float like a superhero and sting like kryptonite as the legendary Muhammad Ali went toe-to-toe with DC Comics' Superman in a special 1978 treasury-sized one shot. And it looks like younger fans will finally get to see the highlights of that match.

DC announced today via their blog The Source that Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams' "Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali" will finally be reprinted for a modern audience. Originally the comic whose cover includes the likeness of multiple celebrities from Frank Sinatra to Christopher Reeve was held up in likeness rights limbo, but the publisher has apparently overcome all legal hurdles and will be able to represent the classic team up where the last son of Krypton and Ali eventually team up to ward off an alien invasion.

DC will release two versions of the story in 2010. One will be a deluxe hardcover edition featuring a new Adams cover and additional sketch material dating back to the original book's publication. There will also be a special edition hardcover which reprints the original story at its original treasury size. (Pricing for the hardcovers were not announced, though it can be assumed the books will cost a bit more than the original's $2.50 price tag.)

I’ve heard this one rumbling for a while now. First there was the story that DC Comics Publisher and President Paul Levitz had personally prevented any Watchmen 2 projects, because, despite their differences, he believed that as this would be against Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ wishes, it would cause bery bad feeling in the creative community and would be a creatively bankrupt move.

Moore fell out massively with DC Comics, and Paul Levitz specifically, not only choosing not to work with them any further, but scuppering spinoff projects, removing his name from any movie credits and any money due to him from said movies, and taking his one final project The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, from Wildstorm, a publisher DC had purchased.

But in the wake of the movie, Watchmen the comic became DC’s best selling publication of all time. One might say partly because it had remained undiluted after all this time.

But there were moves. A Wizard splash showing DC’s Countdown multiverse had Rorschach as one of the combatants and it was rumoured one of the universes in the DC 52 Multiverse was intended to be the Watchmen world. Instead, Earth 4 became a world inspired by elements of Watchmen and the Charlton Heroes universe but with other aspects such as the laws of physics being altered.

But the news broke that Paul Levitz was stepping down from DC Comics as both President and Publisher, I wondered what that meant for the possibility of a Watchmen sequel. Certainly in a hundred years, you couldn’t expect there not to be one.

Well, it seems to be happening a lot sooner than I thought. I understand now that this considered a pet project of Dan DiDio, SVP-Executive Editor. That he is determined to impress new bosses by building on DC’s biggest selling comic book of all time with multiple prequel comic miniseries and spinoff ongoing projects.

I understand that both Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons have to be offered first refusal before any of these titles could be published. But if they don’t want to work on them themselves (and Alan Moore is never going to agree), DiDio has been sounding out people who might be willing to take on the task.

While some creators are reticent, the argument goes if there are a number of Watchmen spinoff projects, any blame or shame can be spread on many shoulders. The sales are expected to be massive, whatever the hardcore fanboy reaction and such expected sales benefits will be shared amongst the creative teams.

In contrast, not only would Levitz not allow any new Watchmen stories but even the video game was restricted to material in the graphic novel and film, nothing brand new was allowed to be invented. Despite differences with Moore, Levitz has held fast to the committment that the comic is the comic is the comic.

It seems that this may now change.

At this stage, having disowned himself of much of it, Alan Moore is likely not to care. Though we might get an eviscerating blast at some point if this all comes to pass.

Both Jim Baike, Rich Veitch and Gene Ha/Zander Cannon are artists who have taken on writing chores on books previously written by Alan Moore, to continue the storyline. The most creatively-acceptable solution would be Dave Gibbons writing and drawing new Watchmen titles. But DiDio’s plans seem much larger than just one book.

And of course, in those initial movie contracts with Fox, there was a clause that included sequels to a Watchmen movie.

When asked, Dave Gibbons only replied “Hurm…”

Well, we weren’t going to leave you hanging there, especially considering the reaction to the first four covers we debuted here on The Source.

So here, to help get you through the week, are the final two covers of writer Grant Morrison’s BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, courtesy of legendary artist Andy Kubert. Including my personal favorite — noir detective Batman:

The questions appear often and in variations: What is BRIGHTEST DAY? How does BLACKEST NIGHT end? And what’s next for the DCU?

Well, we won’t spoil it all for you here, but we can throw another major piece to the puzzle on the table, and that’s this amazing David Finch cover to BRIGHTEST DAY #2, featuring a certain King of the Seas. And we not only have art to show, but we caught up with BRIGHTEST DAY writer Geoff Johns to give us his thoughts. Take it away, Geoff:

“Brightest Day’ is about second chances. I think it’s been obvious from day one that there are major plans for the heroes and villains from Aquaman to take center stage in the DC Universe, among many others, post-Blackest Night. ‘Brightest Day’ is not a banner or a vague catch-all direction for the DC Universe, it is a story. Nor is ‘Brightest Day’ a sign that the DC Universe is going to be all about ‘light and brighty’ superheroes. Some second chances work out…some don’t.”

We all know that BLACKEST NIGHT will reach its epic conclusion in March, but there’s more. This universe-shaking issue will also feature 10 extra story pages for the same $3.99 price. Good deal, no?

And, to tide you over until the issue hits stands, we’ve got an inked version of the cover to BLACKEST NIGHT #8, courtesy of artist Ivan Reis. Enjoy!
